The project
In July 1928, in Germany, Smaranda Brăescu jumped for the first time and earned her license, the first Romanian woman to hold one. She was badly hurt in a 1930 jump near Satu Mare. In 1931 she set a women’s world altitude record for parachuting, and over Sacramento, California, on May 19, 1932, she jumped higher than anyone before her.
That year she also qualified as a private pilot in the United States. In Romania she was called the Queen of the Heights. Ligia Ciornei is developing her story as a feature film.
- The American record
- The Aero Club of Washington certified her May 1932 jump over Sacramento as an absolute world record.
- Her legacy
- Romania’s 53rd Commando Battalion, part of its Special Operations Forces, is named after her, as is a street in Bucharest. A Romanian stamp from 2021 shows her.
- Attached director
- Ligia Ciornei, who wrote and directed Clouds of Chernobyl, is attached to direct.
